At about 10.45AM on 7th February,2021, a glacier burst triggered massive divastating flood in the Dhauli Ganga river causing large-scale damage in the upper reaches of Himalayas in Uttrakhand.
It is reported that more than 7 bodies have been recovered and more than 170 are missing. About 22 people are missing from Rishi Ganga and 148 people from NTPC site .
Many houses, roads and fields have been washed away.
5 bridges have been washed away.
ITBP , under command of Commandant Benudhar Nayak ,1st battalion, deployed more than 300 personnel for search and rescue operation in the devastated area.
Residents of Joshimath talking to our reporter said "ITBP is our savior.They are unmatched in their expertise in search and rescue operation in Himalayas."
Personnel of 8th battalion, 23rd battalion and M&SI Auli were also deployed in the search and rescue operation.
Indian Army and Indian Air Force also activated their teams.
Army has deployed about 200 personnel and Air Force dispatched it's C 130 Aircraft and MI 17helicopters in the search and rescue operation.
C-130 aircraft was used to carry NDRF teams upto Jolly Grant Airbase near Dehradun.
Medical teams and ambulances of ITBP, Army and state government were also deployed.
ITBP personnel rescued many victims.The most heroic rescue was rescue of about 16 construction workers trapped in Tapovan tunnel at NTPC site.
Many villagers and worked in the affected area were also rescued by various teams.
Experts of disaster management praised the prompt response of ITBP.
Locals also recalled the extraordinary efforts made in search and rescue during 2013 Uttrakhand flood.
